I'm a second-generation Montanan, born, raised, and still living in my hometown of Missoula. Intimately connected to place and the four seasons, I've left for periods of time, but always returned to this valley, her mountains, her rivers and dear friends. I've enjoyed a long career in the healing arts earning my doctorate degree and establishing a private practice in Transpersonal Psychology. It was only natural that I would bring my intuitively trained eye to the art of photography; the passion taking hold about 12 years ago when I dubbed my backyard "Walden."
The yard was large with a 100 feet of creek frontage, which was where I parked myself - with a macro lens and a promise to stay put. The challenge I had set was to find beauty where I was sitting and not be looking elsewhere. This, a metaphor that became a discovery of worlds within a world beginning with the textured surface of water-logged wood that came down in the spring run-off and leading to the IceScapes of winter. Ultimately, the discovery was more about light than the subject itself.
No matter the lens, the what or the where, what matters most to me is this: I love deep immersion and connections that touch upon soul and spirit. I strive for essence, what lies below the surface, unsaid, unseen, and I love the reveal of something new; like an insight, an image that takes the breath away or changes one’s perspective. Now, it seems I rarely take a photo for the sake of a photo, but for the capture of something unique and special or seldom seen or never.
Once again, thank you for visiting my gallery and reading this far. I hope you've been intrigued and I'm looking forward to hearing from you.
My inspiration comes from those moments that open me to the mystery. A moment that catches my breath and causes me to look again.
For me, technique is dependent on the subject, where I find myself and my own state of mind; a practice of being totally present or if need be, invisible. .
So many extraordinary moments and I'm still rising. One highlight has led to another and on it goes. Best to be grateful and count my blessings.
