It took me several summers on the ranch before I realized the only way to keep the bears out of the fenced yard was to pick the apples from the trees before the sweet smell of ripeness. These bears are determined and agile, and with ripe apples, a fence will hardly keep them out, unless barbed or electric, which we declined to use. Early scuttles between dogs and bears and humans, taught us the lesson. Forfeit the apples for the gain of safety, but loose the photo op. Oh well...
